NIHR Council of Commissioners Holds Its First Procedural Meeting

The Council of Commissioners of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) held its first procedural meeting today, Sunday, 17 August 2025, chaired by Dr. Mal Allah Al-Hammadi as the eldest member, in accordance with the provisions of Law No. (26) of 2014 on the Establishment of the NIHR, as amended by Decree-Law No. (20) of 2016.
At the outset of the meeting, the chair congratulated the members on the high honor bestowed upon them by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, through their appointment as members of the NIHR Council of Commissioners under Royal Decree No. (26) of 2025.
The commissioners then reviewed the provisions of Law No. (26) of 2014 establishing the NIHR and its amendments, along with the internal regulations governing the work of the Council of Commissioners.
After completing the procedures, elections were held successively for the positions of Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson. Eng. Ali Ahmed Alderazi was elected Chairperson of the Council, while Dr. Mal Allah Al-Hammadi was elected Vice-Chairperson.
On this occasion, Alderazi, on his own behalf and on behalf of all members of the Council of Commissioners, extended his deepest gratitude and appreciation to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa for the royal trust placed in them. He affirmed the commissioners’ commitment to continue performing their duties and responsibilities with impartiality and independence, thereby strengthening the protection and promotion of human rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain in accordance with both national and international human rights standards.
Alderazi also expressed his deep appreciation to the members of the Council for electing him as Chairperson, voicing his pride in working with a cohesive team dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights in the Kingdom, and his commitment to fruitful cooperation with all relevant stakeholders. At the same time, he expressed thanks and appreciation to the former Council members for their sincere efforts and distinguished contributions during their term, which positively supported the mission and objectives of the Institution.
During the meeting, the members of the standing committees were selected and their chairpersons elected, in addition to the appointment of the Child Rights Commissioner. The results were as follows:
· General Rights and Freedoms Committee: Chaired by Counselor Mohammed Fuzai, with members Dr. Maha Al-Shehab and Mr. Daniel Haroun.
· Detention & Facilities Visitation Committee: Chaired by Dr. Mal Allah Jafar Al-Hammadi, with members Mr. Abdullah Khalifa Al-Dhawadi and Ms. Mona George Kouro.
· Complaint, Monitoring & Follow-up Committee: Chaired by Ms. Rawdha Al-Aradi, with members Dr. Hamad Ibrahim Al-Abdullah, Dr. Shaima Mohammed Abdullah, and Ms. Shaikha Hamdi Al-Shaiba.
