14 Nov 2023

Eng. Ali Ahmed Al-Derazi, Chairman of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), has presided the 16th meeting of the NIHR Council of Commissioners, which was held at the NIHR headquarters in Seef district.

The Council reviewed the consultative meetings held with a number of civil society institutions operating in the field of human rights, aiming to define frameworks for cooperation between the NIHR and those institutions, and exchange views on issues that the NIHR wants to establish.  The Board also discussed the NIHR's response to complaints received from international non-government organisations, and the importance of verifying them and communicating with the relevant authorities to find out appropriate solutions to issues related to human rights.

During the meeting, the NIHR Council of Commissioners underscored the importance of supporting human rights defenders, based upon the provision of Article (12) of the NIHR Establishment Law, which provides for the importance of holding joint meetings and events, and cooperation, coordination and consultation with the relevant civil society institutions, non-government organisations, other diverse groups and human rights defenders, and communicating directly with those who claim to be subjected to any form of violation.

The meeting was attended by NIHR Vice-President, heads of the NIHR permanent committees, Commissioner for the Rights of the Child and the NIHR Secretary-General.
