02 Dec 2025

The General Rights and Freedoms Committee held its fourth meeting, chaired by Judge Mohamed Juma Fuzaia, during which the Committee reviewed its key efforts over the past period, including the follow-up of its recommendations, decisions, and the measures taken in this regard, with a focus on updates related to its strategic initiative aimed at promoting human rights awareness and educating various segments of society.

The Committee also reviewed the latest developments in coordinating the implementation of a series of awareness lectures and activities in English for students of foreign schools, with the objective of introducing the role and mandate of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR). It was noted that the Committee is currently awaiting final responses from the relevant authorities to proceed with implementation. The Committee further discussed a proposal to enhance cooperation with entities with which the NIHR has signed Memoranda of Understanding, as part of efforts to expand effective partnerships. Several relevant bodies were identified in preparation for communicating with them in the coming period.

The meeting concluded with a review of the key outcomes of the meeting of the Bureau of the Council of Commissioners, which included the approval of the proposal submitted by the Committee recommending a legislative amendment to the Criminal Procedure Law, as part of the NIHR’s ongoing efforts to support and strengthen the human rights framework.
