General Rights and Freedoms Committee Holds Its Sixth Ordinary Meeting

03 Feb 2026

The General Rights and Freedoms Committee held its sixth meeting, chaired by Mr. Mohamed Juma Fuzaia. At the outset of the meeting, the Committee discussed requests received from the country’s constitutional authorities seeking the opinion of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) on a number of national legislations. These were examined from a human rights, legal, and humanitarian perspective, with a view to ensuring the alignment of such legislations with relevant international instruments and conventions, within the framework of the Institution’s advisory role in the study and review of governing legislation.

In this context, the Committee approved during the past period ten (10) advisory opinions issued by the Institution in response to requests from the legislative authority. This reflects the level of constructive cooperation with the constitutional authorities and affirms the Institution’s fulfillment of its mandate in supporting the national legislator in drafting various legislations.

The Committee also followed up on the outcomes of its previous meetings, particularly with regard to its initiative aimed at developing the legislative frameworks governing human rights, through proposing appropriate amendments that contribute to achieving legislative harmony and enhancing institutional efficiency in the field of protecting and promoting human rights.
