11 Nov 2017

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Civil and Political Rights convened its 6th regular meeting under the chairpersonship of Dr. Badr Mohamed Adel and membership of Mr. Ahmed Mahdi Al-Haddad, at the NIHR’s headquarters in Seef district.

During the meeting, the Committee discussed the views of the NIHR’s General Secretariat referred to it by the Council of Representatives regarding a number of themes, namely the proposal of a law to amend Article 236 of the Penal Code promulgated under the Decree-Law No. 15 of 1976 and the draft law to amend some of the provisions of the Penal Code issued under the Decree-Law No. 15 of 1976.

The Committee also adopted the NIHR’s views on the proposal of a law to amend Article 345 of the Decree-Law No. 15 of 1976 on the promulgation of the Penal Code, stating that the disparity in the application of sanctions between women and men involved in a crime is without prejudice to the principles of criminal justice.

It is worth mentioning that within the framework of the Committee’s mandate to review the legal guarantees for the exercise of the right to vote and to be nominated, which falls within the framework of civil and political rights, the Committee has prepared a preliminary guide for the parliamentary and municipal elections, in order to enhance awareness of the culture of elections that will be witnessed by the Kingdom of Bahrain in the next stage.
