NIHR’s Committee on General Rights and Freedoms convenes its 17th Teleconference Meeting

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on General Rights and Freedoms  convened its 17th teleconference meeting under the chairpersonship of
Dr. Bader Mohamed Adel and membership of Mr. Ahmed Mahdi Alhaddad and
Mrs. Wedad Radhi Almoosawi, where the Committee discussed the NIHR’s proposal to modify the provisions of Chapter 4 of the Law no. (36) of 2012 promulgating the Labor Law in the Private Sector with regard to raising the age for permission of child labor to match the age stated by the Bahraini Child Law and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The Committee continued its discussions of the mechanism of activating the NIHR’s role in verifying the availability of various human rights in workers accommodation places and concluded with a number of ideas aiming at activating the NIHR’s role in this area by increasing its cooperation with the concerned authorities, especially the relevant civil society institutions and urging the concerned authorities to activate their supervisory role and conduct more inspection visits to those accommodation places.  In addition, the Committee proposed some legislative amendments aimed at identifying clear requirements for adequate and appropriate accommodation within the conditions of flexible work permit as well as other requirements related to conducting inspection visits to workers accommodation places.

The Committee also reviewed the proposals related to pivots of the forum that the NIHR intends to hold on the impact of the precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus on the practice of human rights and proposing a number of topics for the awareness programs that shall engage embassies, diplomatic missions and civil society institutions, which aim at spreading awareness of the importance of adhering to precautionary measures to limit the spread of the emerging virus (Covid-19).
