The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on General Rights and Freedoms convened its 8th regular meeting under the chairpersonship of Dr. Bader Mohamed Adel and membership of Mr. Ahmed Mahdi Alhaddad, Mrs. Wedad Radhi Almoosawi and Dr. Malallah Jaffar Alhammadi at the NIHR’s headquarters in the Seef District.

The Committee opened it meeting by discussing its previous resolutions and recommendations and the actions taken thereupon.  Then, it continued its discussion on the promotion of the global campaign on the 10 Principles for My Protection as a Girl, Boy or Adolescent with Disabilities at the request of the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Disability.  It explained that it is in the process of gathering proposals to formulate the final draft of the promotion mechanism for the promotion and protection of people with disabilities in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The Committee also dealt with the US Department of Labor's report on child labor in Bahrain.  It explained that the Kingdom of Bahrain does not suffer from the child labor phenomenon, since the Constitution and national legislation provide full protection for children in various areas.  It pointed out that the US Department of Labor's report has not contained any evidence or cases that indicate the existence of this phenomenon.  However, it contained a request for information and relevant national legislation on combating child labor that aim at the promotion and protection of children's rights.

The Committee concluded with the necessity of conducting a study on that topic, understanding the reasons and facts on which the US Department of Labor relied and considering the convenience of national legislation on the prohibition of child labor with the relevant regional and international instruments.  It pointed out the possibility of referring to the relevant bodies in order to obtain information that can be used in this study.
