NIHR’s Committee on General Rights and Freedoms Convenes its 14th Meeting via Teleconference

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on General Rights and Freedoms has convened its 14th meeting via teleconference under the chairpersonship of Dr. Bader Mohamed Adel and membership of Mr. Ahmed Mahdi Alhaddad and Mrs. Wedad Radhi Almoosawi.

The Committee opened its meeting by praising the lofty speech of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the King of Bahrain, on the occasion of the last ten days of the holy month of Ramadan, where His Majesty has always directed his noble words to the people of Bahrain and all residents, through which he emphasized the importance of maintaining social heritage, customs and traditions while following the preventive instructions issued and precautionary measures taken by the competent authorities to confront the Coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19).

The Committee also valued the humanitarian initiative adopted by Her Royal Highness Princess Sabika bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, the wife of His Majesty the King, the Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Women, to pay the entire debts and amounts owed by Bahraini women who have been subjected to judicial verdicts within the lists published by the Ministry of Interior (Fael Khair initiative).

The Committee reiterated its praise for the great efforts of the Kingdom of Bahrain in order to enable all citizens and residents to enjoy the right to health, as well as the preventive and precautionary measures taken by the Ministry of Health under the exceptional circumstances that the country is passing through, in addition to spreading awareness and educating the community about this virus and taking all that would limit its spread in order to maintain the health and safety of everyone.

The Committee explained the importance of holding a round table on workers’ accommodation and its impact on the spread of Coronavirus while discussing its proposals and perceptions on the events that the NIHR intends to hold this year, which aim at promoting and protecting various civil, political, social and cultural human rights and consolidating their values in the society in consistency with the NIHR’s strategy and action plan for the years 2019 – 2021.

The Committee concluded its meeting by reviewing all its previous decisions and recommendations and the actions taken thereupon.
