Committee on Civil and Political Rights Convenes its 16th Regular Meeting

17 Oct 2016

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Civil and Political Rights held its 16th regular meeting under the chairpersonship of Mrs. Jameela Salman. Present was Committee Member Dr. Badr Mohamed Adel.

The Committee discussed the request referred to it by the NIHR’s Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up Committee to study the Minister of Interior’s Decision No. 89 of 2016 on determining controls and procedures necessary for enforcing the provisions of Articles 8, 9 and 10 of the Bahraini Citizenship Law.  The Secretary-General was assigned to give the NIHR’s opinions on the practical effect of the present decision.

For a periodic assessment of its work, the Committee discussed its achievements since January 2016, including the various proposals and studies, in addition to its opinions on draft laws referred by the Council of Representatives relevant to civil and political rights.

In order to disseminate the culture of human rights and enhance the awareness thereof among various community groups and sects, the Committee discussed the idea of holding a number of events to enhance human rights, which are hoped to be implemented in the near future.

It is worth mentioning that the NIHR’s Civil and Political Rights Committee is one of the three standing specific Committees whose work is focused on preparing proposals and recommendations in everything that aims at enhancing and protecting civil and political human rights, reviewing legal guarantees to the practicing of those rights, following-up the application of relevant international conventions and treaties, examining convenience of legislative and regulatory stipulations and articles of regional and international treaties on human rights issues, studying applicable legislations and codes in Bahrain on civil and political rights and recommending appropriate amendments thereof, giving opinion on the extent of their compliance with international human rights standards and providing necessary proposals thereon, recommending the issuance of new legislations on human rights and contributing to the corresponding draft reports undertaken to be presented by the Kingdom on a periodic basis in this regard.
