General Rights and Freedoms Committee Holds Its Twelfth Regular Meeting

06 Oct 2026

The General Rights and Freedoms Committee held its twelfth regular meeting, chaired by Mohamed Juma Fuzaia, to discuss a number of items on its agenda. During the meeting, the Committee reviewed the views and written contributions submitted by the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) in response to consultations conducted by several international human rights bodies. These submissions addressed a range of human rights issues, reflecting the NIHR’s commitment to actively contributing to international dialogue and exchanging expertise and perspectives on matters of mutual interest.

As part of its ongoing efforts to follow up on the outcomes of its work, the Committee discussed developments in the implementation of recommendations and decisions adopted at its previous meetings. It reviewed a detailed report outlining the measures taken, implementation status, and progress achieved, with a view to strengthening the effectiveness of follow-up mechanisms and ensuring that recommendations are translated into tangible actions.

In line with its efforts to strengthen partnerships and engagement with civil society organizations, the Committee explored ways to further develop cooperation in promoting human rights awareness and culture, training, and capacity-building. It also reviewed proposed frameworks and mechanisms for operationalizing such cooperation, with the aim of enhancing the capacities of relevant working groups within civil society organizations, strengthening their role in safeguarding rights and freedoms, facilitating the exchange of expertise, and fostering coordinated efforts to achieve shared objectives in the promotion and protection of human rights.
