General Rights and Freedoms Committee Holds Its Second Regular Meeting

07 Oct 2025

The General Rights and Freedoms Committee, chaired by Mr. Mohamed Juma Fuzaia, held its second meeting, which began with a follow-up on the measures taken regarding its previous recommendations, particularly those related to ongoing coordination to organize awareness activities in English for school students. This initiative aims to expand the scope of human rights awareness to include various segments of society, especially to educate young people and enhance their understanding of their rights and ways to protect them.

The planned activities will include a series of educational lectures designed to familiarize students with the role and functions of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), as well as its key mandate in protecting and promoting human rights. To ensure the successful implementation of these activities, coordination and communication with relevant authorities are currently underway.

The Committee also reviewed a number of observations concerning advisory opinions received from the legislative authority. These were discussed, and the necessary comments were provided in preparation for submitting appropriate recommendations in this regard.

Within the NIHR’s mandate to propose amendments to national legislation in line with relevant international instruments and to enhance the protection of human rights, the Committee discussed a proposed recommendation to amend certain provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure. This comes within the context of strengthening human rights guarantees during the trial stage, and the Committee took the necessary measures accordingly.
