09 May 2021

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Public Rights and Freedoms has convened its 26th meeting via video conference under the chairpersonship of Dr. Badr Mohamed Adel and membership of Mr. Ahmed Mahdi Al-Haddad and Mrs. Wedad Radhi Al-Moosawi.

The Committee has opened its meeting by praising the directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to prepare a Draft Law on Combating Hatred, Extremism and Contempt of Religions, as per of his noble message on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day. The Chairman of the Committee stated that such directives confirm Bahrain’s role in spreading a culture of peace and coexistence, combating hatred and extremism and rooting coexistence among peoples.

In response to the campaign of allegations and slanders that are being waged against the Kingdom of Bahrain with the aim of tarnishing its human rights reputation, the Committee proposed holding a remote dialogue seminar on the Kingdom of Bahrain's human rights achievements, especially its achievements related to developing the legal system, promoting justice, individual freedoms and an integrated human rights system, and preserving and safeguarding the rights of inmates in correction and rehabilitation centers, through the remarkable expansion called by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, in the alternative penalties program, the call for the adoption of open prisons program to protect the social fabric based upon specific controls, and the work to cooperate with the concerned authorities in shedding light on these achievements as they represent a distinct qualitative leap in achieving human rights principles and establishing them on the ground.

The Committee concluded its meeting by reviewing all its previous resolutions and recommendations and the actions taken thereupon.
