Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up Committee holds its eighth meeting

The NIHR’s Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up Committee held its ordinary eighth meeting under the chairpersonship of Ms. Maria Khouri. The meeting was attended by Committee member Dr. Hameed Ahmed Hussein and Dr. Mona Hijris.

During the meeting, the Committee reviewed all complaints and requests for assistance and legal advice received by the NIHR during the last period and the actions taken regarding the same. The complaints covered claims of failure to receive treatment or the health care in the detention centers and the arrest without following the legal procedures. This included the claim of depriving an individual of his right to freedom of movement by banning him from traveling without showing the reasons. The competent authorities have been contacted regarding such claims. The Committee took the suitable decision in this regard. The Committee received some requests for assistance, legal advice and scrutiny of the procedures to be followed in various cases. On the other hand, the Committee reviewed the cases monitored through the local newspapers and social media networks as well as the measures taken regarding the same; especially communication with the concerned authorities.

Maria Khouri commended the cooperation by the authorities concerned and their speedy response to provide the best solutions to such complaints and requests for assistance. She stressed that working through the Committee, especially that the role of the Council of Commissioners generally may not be effective except through continued and transparent cooperation and communication between all parties’ supported by the commitment and instructions of the wise leadership in order to keep and protect  human rights and respect for the rule of law.

Out of concern of the Committee decided to continue to monitor the court sessions to ensure the conformity of court proceedings with the international standards related to the right to fair trial. Accordingly, the Committee decided to attend the various trial sessions during the next period.

Within the same context and pursuant to the role played by the NIHR in protecting human rights, which requires the Institution to perform field visits for some authority in order to examine their situations and monitor any violations, the Committee decided to visit “Dar Al Aman” Abused Women Shelter, in cooperation with the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, during the coming days.
