NIHR's Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-Up Committee holds its 16th meeting

The NIHR's Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-Up Committee held its 16th meeting on Saturday, 17th May 2014 under the chairpersonship of HE. Mr. Abdullah Ahmed Al Derazi. The meeting was attended by Committee members HE. Ms. Maria Entwan Khuri and HE. Dr. Bader Mohammed Adel.

During the meeting, the Committee reviewed the report on attendance of court sessions in order to know the developments of the trial and the commitment thereof to the international standards in such kind of the trials. The Committee took resolution in this regard to attend the coming sessions. The Committee reviewed the events of the visit made to the Reform and Rehabilitation Center (Jaw Prison) by the NIHR during the last period. Thereafter, all complaints received by the NIHR during the last period and the measures taken were reviewed by the Committee. Four complaints were received, including a complaint related to enabling a convicted person to sit the final examinations of the second semester in the specified dates thereof. On this occasion, the NIHR appeals to and requests the authorities concerned represented by the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Education to take all sufficient measures and provide all necessary facilities to ensure the right of the inmates to education; whether they are convicted or detained pending investigation. Deprivation of this right is an express violation deemed as an additional punishment. In addition, the NIHR received ten requests for assistance and legal advice. The Committee made some decisions which will be entered into force in due course.
