NIHR’s Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up convenes its 20th regular meeting

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up convened its 20th regular meeting under the chairpersonship of Ms. Maria Khour. The meeting was attended by Committee Member Dr. Hameed Hussein. The panel reviewed all complaints and applications for assistance received by the NIHR since the previous meeting of the Committee in 21 November until 13 December 2016, including 6 complaints, for which all the standard actions were taken, and they were communicated to the bodies concerned.  The Committee further received 7 applications for assistance and legal advice and monitored a number of allegations related to treatment of those whose freedom is restricted in addition of another allegation of a normal case, which have been communicated via some local gazettes and social media, and for which verification actions are being taken.

The Committee further explained that, since January 2016 till this date, it has received 143 complaints, 53 of them were closed as result was achieved therein, 14 were closed for demise of the case of violation therein, 5 were closed for lack of jurisdiction and the remaining complaints are still under follow-up, which are either pending response of the concerned bodies and cooperation with them for demise of the case of violation or referred for more research and study.

On the occasion of modification of NIHR’s Establishment Law, giving it more terms of reference in the field of human rights protection and respect, the Committee discussed mechanism of activation of Article 12 Paragraph g of the Law on declared and undeclared field visits for monitoring the human rights conditions in reformative institutions, detention places and other places suspected for violation of human rights.  The Committee further noted that the complaints and applications for assistance should be submitted to it without hesitation.  It referred to the positive cooperation of all concerned bodies and thanked them for their cooperation to activate partnership and national interest and establishing human rights foundations and principles in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
