Complaints, Monitoring & Follow-up Committee holds its 14th ordinary meeting

The National Institution of Human Rights (NIHR) Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up Committee held its 14th regular meeting chaired by HE Ms. Maria Khoury. The meeting was attended by Committee's member HE Dr. Hameed Ahmed Hussein.

During the meeting, all complaints and applications for assistance received by the Institution during the last period were reviewed.

The Committee discussed the proposed laws referred to the NIHR by the Council of Representatives to give its opinion on the amendment of paragraph (f), article (12) of Law No. (26) of 2014 on Establishing the National Institution for Human Rights. The Secretariat-General has been entrusted with studying the proposal and preparing an opinion regarding the same in preparation for submittal thereof to the Committee during the next meeting.

At a related level , and in implementation of the role played by the NIHR, the Committee discussed a proposal on studying the possibility of placing a complaints box in the detention centers. The Committee stressed that the NIHR aims through its various activities and services to promote trust and to create bridges of the fruitful and meaningful communication to render its services in various ways in order to proceed in boosting the culture of human rights within the Kingdom. This proposal supports the activities and events carried out by the Institution through its various committees.

Since January 2016 to date, the Committee has received 75 complaints and 72 applications for legal assistance and consultation. In addition, the Committee has monitored through the press and social media some claims that are within its competence. The Committee studied and verified such complaints,  dealt with and followed up on them.

The Committee expressed its thanks and appreciation for the cooperative efforts exerted by all authorities concerned in communicating with the Committee with the purpose of establishing effective cooperation and the joint work so as to achieve the results desired in relation to the complaints and applications received by the Institution.
