The NIHR's Complaints, Monitoring, and Follow-up Committee held its 10th monthly meeting under the chairmanship of Maria Khoury, and the membership of Dr. Hamid Ahmed Hussein and Dr. Mona Hagras. The members stressed the necessity and importance of communication and follow-up with all competent bodies after studying the complaints and requests for assistance that reach Institution, in addition to monitoring the cases and allegations of human rights violations through the press, media and the means of online social communication. The complaints have varied in the last period from requests to continue studying inside places of detention, receiving the necessary treatment, as well as allegations of ill-treatment. There were also complaints on visitation procedures in the Dry Dock Detention Center.

The Committee also reviewed a proposal submitted by Secretariat- General regarding the procedures of temporary security clearances for those in detention and rehabilitation centers to attend funerals of deceased relatives.

The Committee decided to return the proposal to Secretariat- General for further study and clarification to be resubmitted in line with international standards in this regard while taking into account the specificity of local procedures.

The Complaints, Monitoring, and Follow-up Committee received three complaints and 10 requests for assistance and legal consultation in January.

It is worth noting that alongside receiving and studying complaints related human rights from citizens and residents, and determining the best method to deal with them and follow-up on their status in an effective manner, the Committee also monitors cases of human rights violations in the Kingdom, and provides suggestions concerning the initiatives that aim to end these violations.

One of the Committee’s plans in the near future is to conduct field visits in accordance with the established procedures to monitor the human rights situation in correctional and detention facilities, labor gatherings, as well as health and education centres, all in done in coordination with the competent official authorities.

The Committee receives the complaints and requests for assistance within its terms of reference at its headquarters in the Seef District, or through the official website at www.nihr.org.bh.
