National Institution for Human Rights’ Complaints, Monitoring, and Follow-up Committee holds its Twelfth Regular Meeting

The NIHR's Complaints, Monitoring, and Follow-up Committee held its 12th regular monthly meeting under the chairpersonship of Maria Khoury, and membership of Dr. Hameed Ahmad Hussein, and Dr. Mona Higres. An overview of the various types of complaints and requests for assistance was presented during the meeting.
The meeting reviewed reports on attendance by the Complaints, Monitoring, and Follow-up Committee and General Secretariat at some cases before courts that are within its terms of reference,  so as to monitor  and court procedure and their compatibility with the relevant international standards concerning the right to a fair trial, and to ensure the transparency of the legal process and respect for the international standards of fair trial.
The Committee’s  report on the visit to the Dry Dock Detention Center was also presented. The Committee’s visit came after receiving a number of complaints by relatives of remand detainees with regard to the followed procedures during their visitation to their relatives.


Maria Khoury also presented a brief review of the application that will provide individuals with the opportunity to file complaints, requests for assistance, and monitor them through the official website or through smart phone applications (Android and IOS).

The application will be hopefully launched on Monday, 2 May 2016 at the headquarters of National Institution in the Seef District, amidst the presence of a number of entities and non-government organizations in addition to the local press.

The Complaints, Monitoring, and Follow-up Committee received 8 complaints and 13 requests for assistance and legal consultations during March. It has also monitored a number of topics within its jurisdiction through the local press and social media communication. It has studied such reports to determine the best course of action to deal with such cases  and follow-up them up effectively. The Committee extended its thanks and gratitude to the concerted efforts of all the authorities concerned communicating with it along with the aim of effective cooperation and joint action.
