06 Mar 2018

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up has convened its 10th regular meeting, under the chairpersonship of Ms. Maria Khouri and membership of Mrs. Rawda Salman Al-Aradi and Mr. Khalid Al-Shaer.

During the meeting, the Committee reviewed the overall complaints as well as requests for legal assistance and advice received by the NIHR, including 7 complaints, for which the standard actions have been taken and the parties concerned were contacted for follow-up, in addition to 12 requests for legal assistance and advice, ranging between allegations of lack of treatment and healthcare in addition to seizure of passport.  The NIHR further monitored various themes via the social media, where appropriate actions are being taken to verify them.

On the other hand, the Committee has reviewed the Guide to Receiving Complaints and Requests for Legal Assistance prepared by the Secretariat-General, making its views thereon, in preparation for referral to the Board of Commissioners for Approval.  In addition, the Committee considered a proposal on ways to disseminate and promote a culture of human rights, as the NIHR intends during the coming period to adopt a comprehensive awareness plan for all regions of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

It is worth mentioning that the NIHR receives complaints and requests for legal assistance either personally or via the toll-free hotline 80001144, the NIHR’s website www.nihr.org.bh, or the NIHR Bahrain smartphone application.
