NIHR’s Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up convenes its 9th Regular Meeting

08 Feb 2018

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up convened its 9th regular meeting under the chairpersonship of Ms. Maria Khouri and membership of Mrs. Rawda Salman Al-Aradi. The Committee reviewed the all complaints as well as requests for assistance and legal advice received by the NIHR since the previous Committee meeting, including 24 complaints for which the standard actions have been taken and the parties concerned were contacted for follow-up, in addition to 29 requests for assistance and legal advice, ranging from lack of treatment and healthcare to allegations of deprivation of the freedom of movement and non-payment of wages and passport withholding.

The NIHR explained that it has dismissed a number of complaints and requests for legal assistance as positive results have been achieved therein while the other complaints are still under follow-up, which are either pending response of the parties concerned and cooperation with them for demise of the case of violation or held for further research and study.

The Committee further reviewed 4 cases that have been monitored through social media and local newspapers, which constituted a violation of the rights of individuals, including the case in which the NIHR intervened before the competent authorities, resulting in the placement of an individual in the Psychiatric Hospital after it was proved necessary.

The Committee commended the existing cooperation with the bodies concerned and thanked them for their cooperation in the framework of activating the partnership and national interest and establishing the foundations and principles of human rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

It is worth mentioning that the NIHR receives complaints and requests for assistance through personal attendance, toll-free hotline 80001144, NIHR’s website www.nihr.org.bh, or via the NIHR Bahrain smartphone application.
