The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on the Rights of People with Restricted Freedom convened its 2nd regular meeting at the NIHR’s headquarters in Seef District under the chairpersonship of Ms. Deena Abdulrahman Alladhi and membership of Mrs. Rawdha Salman Alaradi.

The Committee discussed the report on the undeclared visit held by the NIHR to sickle cell anemia department at Salmaniya Medical Complex in accordance with the NIHR’s powers authorizing it to hold declared and undeclared field visits in order to monitor the human rights situation and to verify the allegations on the conditions of sickle cell anemia patients at the Medical Complex, where recommendations were sent to the Ministry of Health.

On the other hand, the Committee discussed a timetable for the field visits, which contained names of a number of detention, preventive detention and rehabilitation centers of the General Administration of Reform and Rehabilitation of the Ministry of Interior, as well as a number of other authorities such as hospitals and care centers which people join at their own will.  The Committee concluded with approval of the proposed visit plans for next June.

The Committee commended the NIHR’s interest in the convicted and detainees’ enjoyment of their rights guaranteed by the Constitution and the relevant laws.  This was after the release of the NIHR’s statement on allegations that a number of inmates of the Reform and Rehabilitation Center (Jaw Prison) have got food poisoning, where the NIHR immediately contacted concerned people at Ministry of Interior who stated the invalidity of such allegations and stressed the importance of receiving information from official sources.
