NIHR's Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Committee holds its 12th Meeting

The Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Committee of the NIHR held its 12th regular meeting under the chairpernship of Mr. Fareed Ghazi at the NIHR's headquarters in the Seef District. The meeting was also attended by Committee members Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery and Dr. Jameela Alsammak.

During the meeting, the Committee reviewed the recommendations of the Secretary-General in respect of the committee's proposal to amend Paragraph 2 of Article (21) of the Law No. (47) of 2006 with respect to Care, Rehabilitation and Employment of Disabled Persons, which intensifies penalty against whoever commits an act of negligence leading to the death of the disabled person, so that the punishment reaches up to imprisonment sentence for a term not exceeding ten years and a fine not exceeding five thousand dinars instead of the former punishment.

It is worth mentioning that the Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Committee is one of the permanent specific committees at NIHR and has the competence to give opinion on issues related to economic, social and cultural human rights, follow up on public opinion issues and related media programs, in addition to studying the economic situation in the Kingdom in terms of income level and prices, evaluating the education curricula and giving opinion on their development according to the international standards,  following up on implementation of related international conventions and treaties, including making a recommendation to accede to the regional and international conventions and agreements related to the economic, social and cultural rights and reviewing reservations which the Kingdom may have entered in respect of certain provisions of the treaties  it has previously joined. Moreover, the Committee is also tasked with studying the legislations and laws in force in the Kingdom with regard to the Economic,
Social and Cultural Rights, for the purpose of developing them to ensure raising the economic, social and cultural level of the citizen and contributing to preparing draft parallel reports which the Kingdom undertakes to submit periodically.
