NIHR’s Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights convenes its 1st Regular Meeting

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights convened its 1st regular meeting, under the chairpersonship of Ms. Maria Khouri and membership of Dr. Hameed Hassan and Dr. Aisha Mubarak, at the NIHR’s headquarters in Seef District.

Head of the Committee opened the meeting by thanking the former members of the Committee for their efforts, stressing the completion and continuation of work by the Committee to the interest of independent human rights action in Bahrain, which accomplishes the objectives of transparency as well as social, economic and cultural safeguards for all segments of society.

The Committee discussed the organizational matters related to the functioning of it through reviewing its terms of reference stipulated in the bylaw on the organization and work of the NIHR’s Council of Commissioners and reviewed its most significant achievements during the past four years (2013 – 2017).  It also studied and drafted the next action plan by listing the international conventions and local laws related to the work of the Committee that falls within the scope of its terms of reference.

The Committee also discussed the Unified Family Law and the draft law to modify some of the provisions of the Decree – Law No. (4) of 2001 on the Prohibition and Combating of Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing, which has been referred to it by the Council of Representatives to show opinion thereon, in addition to the Committee’s most important next action plans, namely raising awareness of the importance of the rights of consumers, expatriate labor and the environment.
