18 Feb 2021

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Visiting Detention Places and Facilities has convened its 23rd meeting via teleconference under the chairpersonship of Dr. Malalla Al-Hammadi and membership of Mr. Khalid Al’Sha’er, Dr. Fawzeya Al-Saleh and Mrs. Deena Al-Ladhi.

The Committee started the meeting by reviewing all its previous resolutions and recommendations and the actions taken thereupon, and completed its discussions on its previous resolution related to preparing a unified manual for the criteria for visits to the correction and rehabilitation centres, health, social and educational care houses and the housing of expatriate workers, to ensure that the basic principles of human rights standards are in place and that there are not any human rights violations, based on the Committee's keenness to activate the supervisory role of the NIHR in the area of protecting and promoting human rights

The Committee also discussed updating the mechanism for conducting field visits, especially in light of the steady increase in the number of people infected with the emerging Coronavirus (Covid-19), in line with the resolutions issued by the National Committee to Combat the Spread of the Coronavirus, to conduct the visits by videoconference.  The Committee also suggested addressing the number of social and health care houses, in addition to big companies that offer accommodation for their workers, in order to be informed of the precautionary and preventive measures that they have taken to ensure maintaining the rights of residents and visitors of those places.
