NIHR’s Committee on Visiting Detention Places and Facilities Convenes its 8th Regular Meeting

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Visiting Detention Places and Facilities has convened its 8th   regular meeting under the chairpersonship of Dr. Malallah Al-Hammadi. The meeting was held at the NIHR’s Headquarters in the Seef District.

The Committee opened its agenda by following up on its previous resolutions and recommendations and the actions taken thereupon.  Then, it discussed the course of the field visit that has been recently conducted to the South Capital Police Station, which aimed at finding out the procedures taken with auditors in terms of human rights, understanding the method to receive communications and to what extent they are rapidly referred to the Public Prosecution, and reviewing the various services provided by it to inmates in accordance with recognized human rights standards.

The Committee also reviewed forms of visiting places of correction, detention and deportation, workers’ dormitories and health and social care centres that have been approved by the NIHR Chairman, which fall within the NIHR’s efforts to develop its mechanism of action with regard to field visits in order to verify the extent to which clients of those facilities and centres enjoy the various rights stipulated in international charters and instruments acceded or ratified by the Kingdom of Bahrain, as part of the NIHR’s keenness to implement its competencies contained in its Establishment Law.

The committee concluded its agenda by agreeing to continue intensive field visits to a number of health and social care centres in the near future, as part of the NIHR’s oversight role in the field of promoting and protecting human rights.
