22 Jun 2020

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Detention & Facilities Visitation convened its 15th teleconference virtual meeting, under the chairpersonship of Dr. Malallah Alhammadi and membership of Mr. Khaled Alshaer, Dr. Fawzeya Alsaleh and Mrs. Deena Alladhi.

The Chairperson of the Committee opened the meeting by reviewing its previous resolutions and recommendations and the actions taken thereupon, especially those related to following up the conditions of foreign convicts covered by the Royal Pardon issued by His Majesty, King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the King of Bahrain, and discussed how to find appropriate mechanisms to facilitate the procedures of their return back to their homelands, in cooperation and coordination with stakeholders in the Ministry of Interior and other competent authorities.

The Committee approved the plans of its field visits to a number of correction and rehabilitation centres and health and social care houses in cooperation with other permanent committees of the NIHR, which aim to continue the Committee’s oversight role over those places to ensure that their occupants exercise all their various rights, especially under the current exceptional conditions witnessed by the country.

The Committee also discussed the actions to ensure human rights conditions in the places designated for the residence of foreign workers and the importance of educating employers about the importance of providing the most essential human rights standards in those places and urging the relevant authorities to activate their oversight role and cooperate with the NIHR in monitoring any violations.
