NIHR’s Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights convenes its 6th Regular Meeting

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights convened its 6th regular meeting, under the chairpersonship of Ms. Maria Khouri and membership of Dr. Hameed Ahmed Hussein and Dr. Aisha Salem Mubarak, at the NIHR’s headquarters in Seef district.

The Committee discussed the work plan of the internal dialogue session, which will bring together the families of persons with severe disabilities, the elderly, stakeholders and specialists in the ministries and agencies, and which will be organized on both the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and the International Day for Older Persons, with a view to raise awareness among citizens about the rights of persons with disabilities and the elderly and focus on the importance of amending the legislation by supporting the legislative system in the field of drafting future legislation that support this group of society, in line with international obligations in this area, and opening the prospect of partnership with NGOs related to the elderly and persons with disabilities.

It is worth mentioning that, within the framework of the Committee's mandate to review the legal guarantees for the promotion and protection of persons with disabilities, which fall within the framework of economic, social and cultural rights, the Committee will organize a number of field visits "for those concerned and their families" to consider their health conditions and their enjoyment of all the rights guaranteed to them by the Constitution, laws and international mechanisms.
