NIHR’s Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights convenes its 5th Regular Meeting

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights convened its 5th regular meeting, under the chairpersonship of Ms. Maria Khouri and membership of Dr. Hameed Ahmed Hussein and Dr. Aisha Salem Mubarak, at the NIHR’s headquarters in the Seef district.

During the meeting, the Committee indicated that an initial consideration would be given to legislation on the right to health being an integral part of human rights.  The Committee shall thereunder organize a dialogue session to bring together persons with disabilities, the elderly, stakeholders and specialists in the relevant ministries and bodies, in order to stand on the situation of the severely disabled and the elderly in the Kingdom of Bahrain with regard to human rights and identify the obstacles and challenges facing them in general and the right to health in particular.

With regard to the Committee’s terms of reference to review the legal guarantees for the exercise of the right to health by the official bodies, which falls within the framework of economic rights, the Committee followed up the case of the Arab woman who was abused by her husband at Salmaniya Hospital, where the Committee communicated with the specialists in Salmaniya Medical Complex to follow up its commitment to provide necessary services as well as all means of treatment and continued support for her during her stay in the hospital and even after her discharge from it.
