NIHR Participates in the International Conference on Human Rights Approach to Conflict Situations in the Arab Region in Doha

A National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s delegation under the chairpersonship of NIHR Vice-Chairperson Mr. Abdullah Al-Derazi and membership of Head of NIHR Committee on Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up Ms. Maria Khouri and Director of Information Technology and Communication Mr. Fahad Al-Mualla, participated in the International Conference on Human Rights Approach to Conflict Situations in the Arab Region, which is hosted by Doha, the capital of Qatar, and which is staged by the National Commission on Human Rights and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, in cooperation with the General Secretariat of the Arab Interior Ministers Council (AIMC) and the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institution (ANNHRI).
The Conference aims at strengthening the human rights-based approach in armed conflict situations in the Arab Region and attempting to find solutions to such crises by discussing various topics related to the prevention of conflicts, conflict management and post-crisis approaches.  It further aims at identifying and developing non-military mechanisms for conflict management and strengthening the rule of law in order to ensure the protection of human rights at times of conflict in the Arab Region.

The 2-day Conference is divided into two parts.  The first part is devoted to an interactive dialogue on tackling violent extremism, peace operations and linking between violations of economic, social and cultural rights, violence, social unrest and conflict.  The second part is divided into 4 technical working groups to discuss protection of children, women and minorities in conflict situations, the impact of armed conflicts on the enjoyment of the right to education, the human rights-based approach to transitional justice and humanitarian assistance in areas of conflict in the Arab Region (challenges and solutions).

On his side, Head of NIHR’s delegation Mr. Abdullah Al-Derazi emphasized the importance of participation of the national institutions in such conferences, which add to the NIHR and members of its council of Commissioners, in terms of multiple figures met by the delegation for exchange of opinions and expertise on human rights, in addition to side meetings through which NIHR’s efforts are highlighted in the area of enhancement and dissemination of the human rights culture in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

It is worth mentioning that the NIHR participated in the Conference as a member of the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institution (ANNHRI) and among more than 200 participants including government officials, UN representatives (peacekeeping missions, UNICEF and OHCHR), international organizations, governmental and non-governmental regional organizations, national human rights institutions, researchers in the field of policies and research centers on human rights protection, conflict resolution and peacekeeping.
