To mark the World Press Freedom Day, which falls on May 3 each year, the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), in partnership with the Bahraini Journalists Association, organized a workshop entitled “Promoting Human Rights Culture in the Media”, which was presented by Ms. Maria Khoury, Chairperson of the NIHR, and Dr. Adnan Jassim, Assistant Professor of Information at the University of Bahrain, at the NIHR’s Training Center, with the participation of a number of journalists and media professionals from various press and media organizations in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Ms. Maria Khoury dealt with the first theme of the workshop, entitled “NIHR’s Role in the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights” and reviewed the most important functions of the NIHR and its effective role in the protection and promotion of human rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain, as well as NIHR’s mechanism of action.  On the other hand, Dr. Adnan dealt with the second theme, entitled “Controls on the Exercise of Freedom of Opinion and Expression”, where he reviewed the Decree-Law No. (47) of 2002 on the organization of press, printing and publishing, the most important duties of a journalist and his/her rights between the law and the code of honor, mechanisms of reply and correction and criminal responsibility in the crimes of publication.

This event falls within the NIHR’s strategy and action plan to promote awareness of human rights principles in civil society organizations and the business sector and expanding cooperation between the NIHR and the journalists and media professionals, based on NIHR’s belief in the importance of the media and the exercise of freedom of opinion and expression.
