NIHR Chairperson’s Statement on Bahrain’s UN Security Council Presidency
Eng. Ali Ahmed Alderazi, Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), stated that the Kingdom of Bahrain’s assumption of the presidency of the United Nations Security Council at this critical juncture reflects the advanced position it has attained on the international stage. This comes within the framework of the comprehensive development process led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the King of the Kingdom of Bahrain, and the close follow-up of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. This, he noted, embodies the growing international confidence in Bahrain’s diplomatic role and its capacity to effectively contribute to the promotion of international peace and security.
He affirmed that this role reinforces the human rights-based approach adopted by the Kingdom in its foreign policy, grounded in respect for the principles of international human rights law, the promotion of justice, the protection of civilians, and the strengthening of regional and international stability, particularly in light of the current challenges and the Iranian attacks witnessed in the region.
He further noted that Bahrain’s presidency of the Security Council acquires heightened importance given the sensitive phase the region is undergoing, as well as the malicious Iranian attacks targeting the Kingdom, which constitute a flagrant violation of international law and a direct threat to fundamental rights, foremost among them the right to life, security, and personal safety.
Alderazi added that this international position provides Bahrain with a pivotal opportunity to convey the true picture of these violations, highlight them at the international level, and advocate for holding perpetrators accountable. This would contribute to strengthening the international human rights protection system, reinforcing the unified Gulf position, and reaffirming a firm commitment to supporting international efforts aimed at safeguarding human dignity and promoting security and stability in the region.
He also emphasized that Bahrain’s presidency of the Security Council offers an important opportunity to play a key role in advancing the adoption of an international resolution to enhance maritime security in the Arabian Gulf, thereby contributing to the protection of maritime routes and ensuring the stability of global trade flows.
In this context, Alderazi commended the distinguished diplomatic efforts undertaken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Bahrain, which resulted in the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution No. (2817), as well as Human Rights Council Resolution No. (61/38). He noted that these achievements reflect the efficiency of Bahraini diplomacy, its ability to mobilize international support, and its effective engagement with multilateral mechanisms in advancing just causes and strengthening the international legal system.
