03 May 2026

On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, Eng. Ali Ahmed Alderazi, Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), commended the role played by the Bahraini media, in all its components, in conveying facts with professionalism and responsibility, and in contributing to enhancing public awareness and promoting the values of transparency and accountability, in a manner that supports the development process and preserves social cohesion.

He noted that free and independent journalism plays a pivotal role in supporting societal stability and advancing sustainable development pathways, particularly in light of the rapidly evolving challenges facing the media landscape, foremost among them the spread of misinformation and the accelerated advancement of modern technologies, including artificial intelligence, and their associated impacts on the flow and reliability of information.

Alderazi also highlighted the efforts undertaken by the Kingdom of Bahrain to update and develop the legislative framework regulating journalistic work, most notably the Press and Electronic Media Law, describing it as a qualitative step in strengthening legal guarantees for freedom of expression, in line with the Constitution and relevant international obligations.

He further affirmed the Institution’s continued commitment to monitoring the Kingdom’s compliance with international standards on press freedom and freedom of expression, emphasizing the importance of fostering a balanced media environment that upholds professionalism, protects journalists, and supports the independence of media outlets.
