NIHR Participates in the GANHRI Annual Meeting

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) participated in the annual meeting of the Global Alliance for National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) 2022, held via videoconference. During the meeting, the GANHRI Chairman welcomed representatives of the national institutions participating from the four regional groups.

During the meeting, the participants approved the appointment of four new members to the GANHRI, who represent national human rights institutions in Finland, Albania, Bulgaria and Norway. The Chairman of the Finance Committee, representative of the National Human Rights Commission of India, also presented the financial report. In addition, the final account of the GANHRI for 2021 and its budget for 2022 were approved. The chairs of the four regional groups, namely Africa, Americas, Asia Pacific and Europe, presented a brief on the work and achievements of their groups over the past year, the challenges faced by national institutions during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how they were overcome.

On the other hand, the representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the representative of the United Nations Development Program gave an overview of their role in providing support and assistance to national human rights institutions to carry out their role in accordance with the Paris Principles regulating the work of national human rights institutions. During the meeting, the National Human Rights Committee in Qatar was elected, as a representative of the Asia-Pacific Forum (APF), to chair the GANHRI, and the National Human Rights Council in Morocco was elected as a representative of the African Group of the GANHRI’s secretariat for the next three years. Members were also briefed on a number of proposed amendments to the statute of the Sub-Committee on Accreditation (SCA) and asked the GANHRI’s office to study it and give its

opinion on it. A summary was also presented on the recommendations and observations of the SCA issued at their last meeting in October 2021.

The NIHR also participated in the meeting that was held the following day on the exchange of experience and expertise, and the role of national institutions in digital technology and benefiting from them in protecting and promoting human rights.
