Participation of HE the Vice Chairperson in the 6th session of the Arab Human Rights Committee (the Charter Committee) in Cairo

Vice Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights, Head of the Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up Committee HE Abdullah Ahmed Al-Derazi participated in the 6th session of the Arab Human Rights Committee (Charter Committee) to discuss the first report of Iraq, which was held at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Arab League in Cairo from 22-23 December 2014.

The committee discussed the extent of the Iraqi state's commitment to the provisions of the Arab Charter on Human Rights with the official delegation of Iraq which was headed by the Minister of Human Rights Dr. Mohammed Mahdi Amin Al-Bayati.

Discussion of the report has already been working sessions were limited to members of the Committee to exchange views about the report on Iraq, the Commission then resumed its meetings to put the observations and recommendations on Iraq’s first report.

The Arab Human Rights Committee emanate from the Arab Charter on Human Rights was decided in Tunis in 2004 and entered into force in 2009 has been ratified by fourteen Arab state so far.

The Committee, which is currently headed by Dr. Hadi bin Ali Alyami, consists of seven personalities known for their expertise, impartiality and independence, elected by the Arab States Parties to the Charter and work independently from governments and the League of Arab States in order to assess the human rights situation in the Arab States through the examination of reports and giving  feedback and recommendations for them to promote and protect human rights.

The Committee has already discussed reports from Algeria, Jordan, UAE, Qatar and Bahrain on the implementation of the Arab Charter on Human Rights.
