NIHR celebrates the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

In coincidence with the international community’s celebrations, the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) celebrated the Human Rights Day, which falls on the 10th of December each year, which marks the 70th anniversary of the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, aiming at the enjoyment of equality, justice and dignity, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language or other, with the participation of senior officials from official bodies, civil society organizations, law enforcement bodies and human rights defenders, in addition to the Head and Members of the NIHR’s Council of Commissioners and Secretary General.

During the ceremony held by the NIHR in its headquarters in Seef district, Ms. Maria Khoury, Chairperson of the NIHR, welcomed the attendees, saying that “This day comes to emphasize the firm approach taken by the Kingdom of Bahrain to commit to all aspects of the preservation of dignity and human rights through the national mechanisms established to enshrine and protect the principles of human rights”.  She added, "We are always keen to involve you in such open meetings that contribute to increase communication and enhance means of joint cooperation to advance the human rights situation in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Ms. Khoury continued saying that, “The Bahraini society is characterized by living in intimacy and loving through the ages, as Bahrain is a land of a civilization of peace and coexistence, and we at the NIHR are all pleased to support any local, regional or international effort aiming at achieving lasting and just peace throughout the world”.

She concluded her speech by saying that, “The Kingdom of Bahrain’s advanced position in the human rights area would not have been achieved without the attention of the political leadership that supports all that would promote, protect and develop human rights in Bahrain”.

For his part, Dr. Khalifa bin Ali Al Fadhel, NIHR’ Secretary General, said, “Human rights defenders all over the world celebrate today the annual anniversary of the issuance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as the first pillar in building the global human rights system, stressing that the respect for human rights is the responsibility of everyone”.

Dr. Al Fadhel added that, “We, in turn, recognize the importance of the promotion and protection of human rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain, which is indivisible and has been enshrined in Bahrain’s Constitution and national legislation, based on the deep political leadership’s belief in human dignity and respect for human rights and its commitment to protect it, which spares no effort to preserve, respect and promote hose rights”.

On this occasion, the NIHR’s Secretariat General launched the NIHR’s strategy for the years 2019-2021 based upon the promotion and protection of human rights in accordance with the modern human rights principles, frameworks and best practices.
