10 Oct 2025

On the occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child, observed annually on October 11 under the theme “My Voice, Our Equal Future: Girls in the Frontlines of Crises”, Dr. Maha Al Shehab, the Child Rights Commissioner at the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), affirmed that this day represents an important opportunity to shed light on the rights of girls and to promote their active participation in building a more just and equitable future.

Dr. Al Shehab emphasized that the Kingdom of Bahrain attaches great importance to childhood, guided by the Constitution of the Kingdom of Bahrain, which guarantees every child the right to a decent life, including access to education, healthcare, proper nutrition, and comprehensive social care. This commitment is further supported by national policies and programs that strengthen the protection of children’s rights—particularly the rights of girls.

The Child Rights Commissioner also affirmed the NIHR’s keenness to monitor and assess the status of child rights in the Kingdom through field monitoring mechanisms, the receipt of complaints, and coordination with relevant authorities to ensure that all children enjoy their rights without discrimination, in line with the provisions of the Constitution and relevant international standards.

She further noted that the NIHR pays special attention to promoting a culture of child rights within society through awareness and educational programs, particularly in educational and community institutions, with the aim of empowering children and girls to play a positive and active role in their communities.

Dr. Al Shehab concluded her statement by reaffirming the NIHR’s continued commitment to monitoring Bahrain’s compliance with relevant international conventions and treaties, especially the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its Optional Protocols, as well as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, in order to strengthen the legal protection of girls and support their meaningful participation in public life.
