National Committee for International Humanitarian Law organizes a workshop with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)

National Committee of International Humanitarian Law chaired by HE Sheikh Khalid bin Ali bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Minister of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments, in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) organized a workshop on the principles, basic concepts and rules of international humanitarian law, which was attended by Mr. Yasser Ghanem Shaheen, Director of Legal Affairs as a representative of the National Institution for Human Rights.

The workshop was also attended by Mr. Yehia Khalil, head of the ICRC's regional delegation in Kuwait, Ms. Monia Ammar, regional coordinator of international humanitarian law at the regional headquarters of the International Committee in Cairo, Ms. Ghada al-Shawa legal adviser in the regional headquarters of the International Committee in Kuwait, in the presence of members of the Committee.

uring the workshop they reviewed concepts of the international humanitarian law and got acquainted with the efforts of the International Committee of the Red Cross, particularly with regard to humanitarian role and function in accordance with international conventions.

They also coordinated means of mutual cooperation, support of training programs to the competent authorities; promote awareness of the principles and concepts of international humanitarian law, and backing of active community projects in this area.

It was also during this workshop, they worked on the formulation and development of the national plan for the work of the Committee, especially at the level of the exchange of information and experiences with national, Arab, regional, and international organizations and committees, to act on the preparation of studies, submission of proposals, and to study the recommendations and reports on the principles of international humanitarian law, and the development and follow-up with the concerned authorities, Also reviewing national legislation of all kinds and degrees to ascertain their conformity with the international protocols, conventions and treaties, and to contribute to the development of educational programs on international humanitarian law in the curricula, and the organization of training, preparing and qualifying programs for national cadres in related competencies.

For his part, the chairman and members of the committee welcomed the experts of the International Committee of the Red Cross and praised to their role and cooperation with the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

It is worth mentioning that the Committee - established under Decree No. (39) for the year 2014 is concerned with all matters relating to the implementation and application of international humanitarian law and the development of related policies, strategies and plans, especially the exchange of information and experiences with relevant national, Arab, regional and international organizations and committees, and strengthen cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross and bodies concerned with the promotion and application of the principles of international humanitarian law.

Committee members include representatives from Bahrain Defence Force, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, Information Affairs Authority, University of Bahrain, and the Association of Bahrain Red Crescent. Members of the Committee were named by the decision of the Minister of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments No. (58) for the year 2014.
