NIHR Delegation meets Irish Officials

As part of the Human Rights Training Plan, a delegation from the National Institution for Human Rights met with the Government of Ireland Deputy-Director of the Middle East and Africa, Connor Long and Deputy Director of the Human Rights Department, Caroline Phelan, in the Irish capital of Dublin.

The NIHR Delegation briefed the Government of Ireland representatives on their work, goals established under Law 26 of 2014, mechanism of work for the standing committees, as well as the developed mechanism to receive complaints relating to human rights and legal aid.

The parties also discussed the NIHR’s work on national human rights legislation and legal opinions given to the government on developing legislation in line with the international instruments of human rights.

The visit to Ireland was part of a training programme attended on the field of human rights.

The Irish officials spoke on the role of the Ministry in following up human rights situations in the region, and the importance of providing basic rights to citizens and residents in those countries, as well as the role of the Foreign Ministry in finding solutions.

The two parties welcomed the cooperation and exchange of expertise and provision of technical support and training in the field of human rights.

The NIHR delegation consisted of its Chairman Dr. Abdulaziz Abul, Vice-President Abdullah Alderazi, Chairperson of the Civil and Political Rights Committee Jamila Ali Salman, Chairman of the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Farid Ghazi, Chairperson of the Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up Committee Maria Khoury and, Adviser and Assistant Secretary-General Yasser Shahin.
