NIHR organizes a Visit to the Psychiatric Center

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, under the chairpersonship of Ms. Maria Khouri and membership of Dr. Hameed Hassan and Dr. Aisha Mubarak, visited the Psychiatric Center, with the aim to inspect the suites of the mentally disabled and ensure the availability of the necessary health caring for this group.

The Committee met with Dr. Fadel Al-Nasheet, the Acting director of the Psychiatric Hospital.  Ms. Khouri explained that the purpose of the visit was to increase understanding of disability issues and support the all-friendly designs to ensure the rights of people with special needs, and to have a closer look at the cases to increase the role of the NIHR by proposing amendments to the legislations that guarantee more rights to care and health for this group.

For his part, Dr. Al-Nasheet commended the visit by the NIHR and its humanitarian role in the protection and promotion of human rights.  He also reviewed the role of the Psychiatric Hospital in the classification of mental disability cases, stages and ways of handling thereof, especially those critical and severe ones, as well as healthcare provided to them.

The visit included a tour of the hospital suites for a closer review of the cases, and it was agreed that the Committee will coordinate with the management of the hospital to visit a number of families of people with special needs, in order to view their living conditions and help them overcome the obstacles facing them by activating the Committee’s terms of reference.
