The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), in cooperation with the Supreme Council for Environment, organized an awareness workshop titled “Let's Protect Our Environment from Plastic” as part of the “Young Human Rights Advocate” Programme, launched by the NIHR in July 2026. The workshop was attended by Dr. Maha Al Shehab, Commissioner for Children's Rights, along with a number of children participating in the programme.

The workshop aimed to enhance environmental awareness among children, educate them about the dangers of plastic waste and its adverse effects on the environment and living organisms, and encourage them to adopt positive practices and behaviours that contribute to environmental protection and the reduction of plastic pollution.

The workshop covered various types of waste and the time required for their decomposition, as well as the harmful effects of plastic waste on soil and marine life. It also highlighted several everyday practices that can help reduce plastic consumption, including the use of reusable bags and bottles, waste segregation, and raising environmental awareness within the community.

The workshop also featured interactive activities and practical exercises designed to familiarize children with proper waste sorting and disposal methods, thereby encouraging their active participation in environmental protection and strengthening their sense of responsibility towards the environment.

This workshop forms part of the “Young Human Rights Advocate” Programme, implemented by the NIHR from July to October 2026, with the participation of 20 children aged between 9 and 18. The programme aims to enhance children's awareness of their rights and responsibilities, develop their skills in participation and expressing opinions, instil the values of citizenship and belonging, and introduce them to the roles of national institutions and official authorities in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
