NIHR Chairperson Marks 25th Anniversary of the National Action Charter

14 Feb 2026

On the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the adoption of the National Action Charter, Eng. Ali Ahmed Alderazi, Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), affirmed that the Charter constituted a constitutional and political cornerstone for an advanced phase of legislative and institutional reforms. It has contributed to the development of the legal framework governing the protection and promotion of human rights and to the consolidation of constitutional guarantees for civil and political rights, as well as economic, social and cultural rights, in line with the Kingdom of Bahrain’s international obligations in this field.

He explained that this national occasion represents a pivotal milestone in the trajectory of constitutional and human rights development in the Kingdom of Bahrain. It reflects the popular will that laid the foundations of a state of law and institutions, strengthened the principles of participation, accountability, justice and equality, and safeguarded public rights and freedoms within the framework of constitutional legitimacy.

Alderazi noted that the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), as an independent national mechanism mandated to promote and protect human rights, plays a central role in following up on the consolidation of the principles enshrined in the Charter. This is achieved through monitoring the human rights situation, receiving complaints through the prescribed channels, preparing objective reports, and submitting recommendations and proposals concerning legislation and public policies, thereby enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the national human rights system and reinforcing the rule of law.

In concluding his statement, he affirmed that NIHR will continue to carry out its mandate with independence, impartiality and professionalism, and to work towards strengthening safeguards for the protection and promotion of rights and freedoms, in a manner that embodies the enduring reform principles set out in the National Action Charter and supports the Kingdom of Bahrain’s ongoing efforts to respect and protect human rights.
