NIHR, in Cooperation with Shaikha Hessa Girls School, Organizes Awareness Event on International Day of the Girl Child
The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), in cooperation with Shaikha Hessa Girls School, organized an awareness event on the occasion of the International Day of the Girl Child, under the theme “Girls’ Rights: Awareness for Protection, Empowerment for the Future.” The event targeted middle school students and aimed to enhance their awareness of their rights and the legal safeguards established for their protection, while encouraging their positive participation in society.
Dr. Maha Saleh Al Shehab, Child Rights Commissioner at NIHR, delivered a lecture in which she presented, in a simplified and age-appropriate manner, the fundamental rights of girls, particularly the rights to education, protection, safety, and freedom of opinion and expression. She also highlighted the legislation and relevant authorities responsible for protecting children's rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain, while introducing the role of NIHR, the mandate of the Child Rights Commissioner, and the available channels for seeking protection and assistance and submitting complaints. The lecture aimed to strengthen students’ understanding of their rights and how to exercise and safeguard them.
The lecture also addressed the importance of empowering girls, developing their capabilities, and building their self-confidence. It emphasized the role of families, schools, and relevant institutions in providing a safe and supportive environment that upholds their rights and protects them from discrimination, violence, and abuse, enabling them to achieve their aspirations and contribute effectively to society.
The event forms part of NIHR’s ongoing efforts to strengthen partnerships with educational institutions, promote a culture of human rights among younger generations, and foster a generation that is aware of its rights and responsibilities.
