NIHR’s Committee on Visiting Places of Detention and Facilities Conducts an Inspection Visit to the Detention Centre at the General Traffic Department
In line with the broad mandate granted to the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) in the field of protecting and promoting human rights, and the jurisdiction granted to it under the provisions of its Establishment Law, the NIHR’s Committee on Visiting Places of Detention and Facilities has conducted an inspection visit to the Detention Centre at the General Traffic Department to determine the human rights situation and to ensure that the detainees enjoy their prescribed rights, before, during or after the arrest procedures.
During the visit, the NIHR’s delegation was briefed on all detention departments, and met with a number of those held in pretrial detention pending investigation. The delegation also listened briefly on the role of officials in the Detention Centre in securing the rights and duties of pretrial detainees and the most important procedures related to this issue. The delegation praised the efforts made by those in charge of the arrest in particular, and the efforts made by the Ministry of Interior in general in applying human rights standards and providing care and attention to the detainees in such centres.
