NIHR holds a meeting with the Committee Against Torture (CAT)
The National Institution for Human Rights, represented by Eng. Ali Ahmed Alderazi, Chairperson of the Institution, and Counsellor Yasser Ghanem Shaheen, the Secretary General, held a meeting with the Committee Against Torture at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Palais Wilson in Geneva. The Committee consists of 10 independent experts who monitor the implementation of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment by the State Parties.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Chairperson presented a brief about the parallel report submitted by the Institution to the Committee, concerning the fourth national report of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the Committee Against Torture.
Alderazi clarified that the Institution’s report included three main axes. The first relates to the national legislation regulating the prevention of torture and other cruel or inhuman treatment, the second relates to the National Institution carrying out its mandate of monitoring the State’s implementation of its obligations under the Convention against Torture, where the Committee was provided with a number of pieces of information regarding the complaints received by the Institution related to torture allegations and what was done regarding them, in addition to the training and awareness programmes carried out by the Institution for law-enforcement officials, civil society organizations, and human rights defenders.
He added that the report concluded with a number of recommendations aimed at supporting and strengthening national legislation to ensure the provision of fair remedies and the promotion of human rights.
The Committee thanked the Institution for its report and raised a number of inquiries about it, and exchanged with the Institution ways and mechanisms to support and enhance human rights conditions, in a way that ensures the fullest implementation of the Convention’s provisions and articles.
