National Institution for Human Rights participate in the work of the 29th annual conference of Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI)

A National Institution for Human Rights delegation headed by HE Abdullah Ahmed Al-Derazi,  Vice President of the National Institute for Human Rights (NIHR), in addition to members of the Council of Commissioners Ms. Jamila Salman, Miss Maria Khoury, Dr. Bader Adel, Dr. Hameed Hussein, Dr. Mona Hajis and Mr. Fahad Almuala, Director of Information Technology and Communication at the Secretariat General of NIHR, participated  in the twenty-ninth annual conference of the United Nations "International Coordinating Committee of National Institutions for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights" (ICC), which was held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva during the period from 21 to March 23, under the theme "the current challenges facing human  rights protection ", in collaboration with the High Commissioner of the United Nations for human rights (OHCHR).

The title of the “International Coordinating Committee” was changed to the “Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions” (GANHRI) that includes all national institutions concerned with the protection and promotion of human rights in the world, and also aims to address urgent challenges associated with human rights violations, as well as preserving peace and human security, based on its work of monitoring, investigating and addressing complaints and reporting of cases of human rights violation,  in addition to providing advice to states.

The aim of this year's conference is to identify ways and effective means by which national institutions can adopt to promote human rights, whether individually or jointly in accordance with the powers and responsibilities vested in them, in addition to discussing human rights challenges related to the current conflicts in all parts of the world and the extent of the negative impact left by extremism and mass displacement of people on the human rights system.

During the meeting, the communication strategy project of the Global Alliance of National Institutions was discussed. The financial report, the Committee's activities report and its office renovation were reviewed. The Committee's President and secretary-general were elected. In addition to approving the Subcommittee report. During the meeting a report on the activities and prospects of the work of the working group on business and human rights was also discussed. Accreditation certificates were presented to the National Institutions for Human Rights which were examined by the Sub-Committee on Accreditation (SCA) for compliance with the Paris Principles of governing the work national institutions during the committee meeting last November.

The meeting of the International Coordinating Committee for this year was marked by the organization of the "space for knowledge sharing", the first initiative of its kind that allows for national human rights institutions to present their activities and actions, and is linked to the main the seminar, allowing for the exchange of experiences, best practices and publications among these institutions.

On the sidelines of a meeting of the International Coordinating Committee, HE Abdullah Alderazi, head of the delegation, and the accompanying delegation met with Mr. Faraj Fneish, Executive Director of the Middle East and North Africa in the High Commissioner Office for Human Rights, and Mr. Mohamed Al-Nisour, Head of the Middle East and North Africa division at HR Commission. They discussed aspects of joint cooperation between the National Institution for Human Rights and the High Commissioner of the United Nations in the field of capacity building and exchange of experiences with regard to the protection and promotion of and respect for human rights, and the necessary requirements to enable the National Institution for Human Rights to play its role effectively in the promotion and protection of human rights under all political circumstances or extraordinary circumstances, to achieve commitment to human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and all relevant international conventions and covenants..

The NIHR's delegation also met with Katharina Rose, the Geneva Representative of the International Coordinating Committee of National Human Rights Institutions (ICC) and discussed with her aspects of enhancing the National Institution for Human Rights' activities in the areas of professional and legal development, including aspects capacity building  for members  of the Council of Commissioners as well as employees at the Secretariat-General of the NIHR.  The delegation also listened to some explanation from Ms. Rose of the best practices applied in national human rights institutions operating in other countries in order to identify what can be adopted in accordance with the Paris principles of the organization governing the work of national human rights institutions.

This conference is considered as an annual platform for national institutions from around the world to raise issues and human rights concerns with their partners from the United Nations and civil society, and to share experiences of national human rights institutions and their approaches as well as the challenges of working in conflict and post-conflict situations, taking into account "Kyiv Declaration and the Secretary-General's Human Rights Up Front Initiative" launched by the UN Secretary-General recently. The conference also avenue for discussing the experiences of national human rights institutions and their approaches and the challenges of developing human rights-based approaches to the current mass exodus, including asylum seekers, refugees and migrants, and actions taken by States in response to that,  in addition to discussing the experiences of national human rights institutions and their approaches and the challenges of developing human rights-based approaches relating to violent extremism, racism, xenophobia, hate speech and actions taken by countries to counter this extremism.
