NIHR Chairperson Meets Social Development Minister

22 Feb 2026

Eng. Ali Ahmed Alderazi, Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), met with H.E. Mr. Osama bin Saleh Al Alawi, Minister of Social Development, at the Ministry’s headquarters, within the framework of strengthening cooperation and joint coordination between the two sides.

During the meeting, Alderazi presented a briefing on the civil society working groups recently established by NIHR in the areas of business and human rights, women’s and children’s rights, and the right to health. He outlined the objectives behind the establishment of these groups, their working mechanisms, and their mandated role in strengthening partnership with civil society organizations and activating their contribution to the promotion and protection of human rights.

Alderazi explained that the establishment of these working groups reflects the Institution’s commitment to broadening consultation and engagement with various components of civil society. This approach aims to support the monitoring of existing challenges, the exchange of expertise, and the development of joint initiatives that promote a culture of human rights and consolidate its principles. He further noted that the Institution serves as a link between the Government, as the executive authority responsible for implementing laws and primarily entrusted with promoting and protecting human rights within the national framework, and civil society organizations, as independent national entities representing the shared interests of groups of individuals on legitimate grounds. This role enhances complementarity and coordination of efforts in service of the public interest.

For his part, H.E. the Minister commended the Institution’s efforts in this regard, underscoring the importance of complementarity between official entities and civil society organizations to support joint national action and strengthen the protection of rights and freedoms.
