NIHR’s Chairperson meets Representatives of Civil Society Organizations

Ms. Maria Khoury, Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), met with representatives of civil society organizations relevant to human rights, namely Mabade’a Society for Human Rights, Bahrain Jurists Society, Bahrain Human Rights Monitor and Al-Bayarq Al-Bayda Society, where she welcomed them in the House of Human Rights, stressing the integrated role of civil society organizations with the NIHR’s role aimed at the promotion and protection of fundamental rights and freedoms, where everybody emphasized the importance of joint cooperation with civil society organizations.

During the meeting, Ms. Khoury presented a brief on the NIHR’s strategy and action plan for the years 2019-2021 and stated the importance of activating the theme on “Disseminating Awareness of Human Rights Principles in Civil Society Organizations and the Business Sector”, which is one of the four themes of the strategy, namely “Environmental Impact on Human Rights”, “Human Rights and Sustainable Economic Development” and “the Right to Equal Treatment”.

Ms. Khoury stressed the NIHR’s ongoing efforts to deepen the relationship with civil society organizations, with the aim to raise awareness of the human rights situation in the Kingdom of Bahrain and protect the rights and spread the values of peace, coexistence and moderation.  The meeting also dealt with a number of topics to promote actual cooperation between the parties in the near future, most notably a proposal to sign a memorandum of cooperation aiming to establish an action plan and an executive program for the coming period to spread the culture of human rights among all society members.
