NIHR participates in the 21st Session of the Independent Permanent Commission for Human Rights of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), represented by D. Malallah Al-Hammadi, Member of the NIHR Council of Commissioners, Head of the NIHR Committee on Visiting Detention Places and Facilities, has participated in the 21st session of the Independent Permanent Commission for Human Rights of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which was held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Over the course of a full day, the session discussed business and human rights of the OIC countries with the wide participation of international experts from the UN, OIC specialised institutions, a number of businessmen in various fields and representatives of Member States and Observer States of the OIC and its national human rights institutions.

The session also aimed at discussing challenges, assessing progress made at the sub-regional level and opportunities for harmonisation of legal instruments, proposing ways to enhance awareness of this important topic, analysing international and regional initiatives and existing initiatives of the OIC, and normative frameworks related to business and human rights, understanding the requirements of human rights due diligence for international, regional and national partnerships and Sustainable Development Plan 2023, and identifying key challenges to prevent and address human rights abuses in the context of business.
