NIHR Receives a Delegation of GCC Reform and Rehabilitation Departments

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Chairperson Dr. Abdul-Aziz Hassan Abul received a delegation, at the NIHR’s headquarters, which comprised representatives of GCC reform and rehabilitation departments, on the sidelines of their visit to the Kingdom of Bahrain in order to participate in the events of the “5th Unified Gulf Inmates Week”, under the slogan of “Together to Achieve Reform”, which was held this month December 25-28.

At the beginning of the meeting, the NIHR’s Chairperson welcomed the visiting delegation.  He stressed that human rights are ensured and protected in the Gulf countries, due to Their Majesties and Highnesses GCC Leaders’ deep belief in human dignity secured by Islam.

The NIHR’s Chairperson further reviewed the role adopted by the NIHR in dissemination and enhancement of the human rights culture and human rights protection, in addition to NIHR’s other duties, including the follow-up of complaints of citizens and non-citizens, which are relevant to human rights.

On his side, the NIHR’s Vice chairperson Mr. Abdullah Al-Derazi presented a brief on the NIHR’s strategy of action, objectives and terms of reference as provided in its Establishment Law pursuant to the Paris Principles.  Furthermore, the NIHR’s Head of Complaints, Monitoring and Follow-up Committee Ms. Maria Khouri briefed the visiting delegation on the NIHR’s mechanism of receiving complaints as well as its assistance responses.  At the same time, she esteemed the constructive cooperation between Ministry of Interior and the NIHR to achieve the aims which serve both citizens and non-citizens in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

On their side, the delegation members expressed their thankfulness for hospitality and good reception and praised the NIHR’s efforts in the human rights arena and its persistent efforts to carry out its social responsibilities in a significant and distinguished way.

The delegation’s visit program included a tour of the NIHR’s building halls, where the delegation members were introduced to the NIHR’s training center, library and complaints receiving office.  Meeting was further attended by the NIHR’s Information Technology and Communication Director.
