Statement by Chairperson of NIHR on the Special Session of the Human Rights Council Regarding the Iranian Aggressions

26 Mar 2026

In light of the special session of the United Nations Human Rights Council held yesterday in Geneva, and the deliberations and adopted resolution concerning recent developments, Eng. Ali Ahmed Alderazi, Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), underscored the importance of this international action in shedding light on the human rights and humanitarian dimensions of the ongoing events, particularly in the context of the brutal aggressions carried out by Iran and their serious repercussions affecting human rights and the protection of civilians.

Alderazi commended the role undertaken by the Kingdom of Bahrain, on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states and the Kingdom of Jordan, in advocating for the convening of this urgent discussion, based on the principles of international law. This reflects a firm commitment to the protection of civilians, the promotion of regional peace and security, and the confrontation of violations that undermine state sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He further explained that the discussions held during the session, and the resolution’s explicit condemnation of the brutal Iranian aggressions and the direct targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure, reaffirm the centrality of international human rights law and international humanitarian law—particularly the principles of civilian protection, respect for state sovereignty, and the prohibition of the use of force outside legitimate frameworks. He also stressed that ensuring accountability for such aggressions and violations, as well as providing reparation to victims, constitutes fundamental pillars for achieving justice and fairness, and for strengthening international confidence in the human rights protection system.

In this context, Alderazi affirmed that NIHR to monitor developments on the ground through its Standing Committees, by observing the humanitarian impacts resulting from these brutal Iranian aggressions. This includes assessing the conditions of the injured and affected individuals, documenting damage inflicted upon civilians and civilian infrastructure, and engaging with relevant authorities to review the level of care provided. The Institution also prepares professional human rights reports based on internationally recognized standards for monitoring and documenting violations.
