Statement by the Chairperson of NIHR on the Special Session of the Human Rights Council

26 Mar 2026

In light of the special session of the Human Rights Council held yesterday in Geneva, and the deliberations and adopted resolution arising therefrom concerning recent developments, Eng. Ali Ahmed Alderazi, Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), underscored the importance of this international action in highlighting the human rights and humanitarian dimensions of the ongoing events.

Alderazi commended the role undertaken by the Kingdom of Bahrain, on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) States and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, in advancing the convening of this urgent discussion, grounded in the principles of international law, reflecting a firm commitment to the protection of civilians and the promotion of regional peace and security.

He further noted that the discussions held during the session, and the resolution’s explicit condemnation of the targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure, reaffirm the centrality of international human rights law and international humanitarian law, particularly the principles of civilian protection, respect for State sovereignty, and the prohibition of the use of force outside legitimate frameworks. He also stressed that ensuring accountability for violations and providing reparation to victims constitute fundamental pillars for achieving justice and equity, and for strengthening the international community’s confidence in the human rights protection system.

In this context, Alderazi affirmed that the NIHR continues to closely monitor developments on the ground through its competent committees, by assessing the humanitarian impact of the attacks, including the conditions of the injured and affected persons, documenting damage sustained by civilians, maintaining communication with relevant authorities to review the level of care provided, and preparing human rights reports based on international standards for monitoring violations.
